Let's make the environment cleaner!
Deputy Prime Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoglu said that the use of plastic bags with handles in Northern Cyprus will be prohibited from May 29, 2023. The ban aims to reduce promotions or campaigns for the use of plastic bags, as well as minimizing their consumption. The decision, which will come into force at the beginning of June, will apply in markets and shops, as well as other relevant workplaces.
Fikri Ataoglu also noted that his ministry has taken a decisive stance to eliminate plastic bags that harm the environment from our lives. Commenting that the use of plastic is currently banned in various countries around the world, Ataoglu said that plastic bags are only used for about 12 minutes and continue to pollute nature for up to 1,000 years.
The Council of Ministers also decided to ban single-use plastic items such as plates, forks, knives and straws. Ataoglu said that the decree on reducing the impact of single-use plastic products on the environment will come into force on 11.07.2023.
Ataoglu added that they will protect nature by gradually getting rid of plastic.
