Hechitkale Airport is a valuable asset of the country and can not be left in decline

Hechitkale Airport is a valuable asset of the country and can not be left in decline, said the Minister of Communications and Transport of Northern Cyprus Tolgan Atakan.

He noted that his ministry was considering various alternatives for the airport, including use for aircraft maintenance, for freight transport or for private aviation. Atakan also said that in the event of war or natural disasters, it is necessary to have a spare operating and usable airport in the country.

He stressed that today the main problem with the airport of Gechitkale is problems with the supply of electricity in this area. However, the minister added that he instructed that the necessary work to address this problem be started as soon as possible.

The minister also said that in the near future he will have a meeting with a company that signed a contract with the ministry to discuss plans and the company's program for the airport.

Discussing also about the reconstruction carried out at the Erkan airport, Atakan said that the work is continuing intensively and will be completed by the planned date.
He further said that the work at the Ercan airport is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2019, and added that the government decided that the opening of the renovated airport would take place on the Republic Day of the TRNC on November 15, 2019.
