Varosha, the deserted city, has seen nearly two million foreign visitors

Since the unveiling of Varosha, this deserted city has received 1,821,000 visitors, both local and international. This place was once renowned as one of the world’s most desirable tourist destinations, boasting modern architecture.

It’s worth noting that this region was taken over by the Turkish military forces during the Cyprus operation in 1974.

That same year, the UN Security Council decided to close it off for resettlement. The area, situated on the “green line” that splits the island into two, functions as a buffer zone. It stayed closed for a span of 46 years.

The deserted city of Varosha started to gradually welcome tourists from October 8, 2020. In the subsequent years, the abandoned area that’s open to visitors saw the renovation of roads, construction of bicycle lanes, and the opening of coastal beaches.

In 2021, a national garden was inaugurated within the popular tourist site.

Moreover, the ancient Bilal Ağa Mosque (Bilal Ağa Mescidi), with a history spanning 200 years, has been refurbished and opened for visitors.

As per TRT News, Varosha has received 1,821,000 visitors since its opening.

The administration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is persistently working towards the complete opening of Varosha.
