20th “Cyprus Theatre Festival” opens its curtains
The Cyprus Theatre Festival, organized for the 20th time this year by the Lefkosia Municipality, opened its curtains under the slogan “Those who can meet the light, those who can rejoice, those who can change.”
In his opening speech, the chairman of the festival organizing committee, Kıymet Biber, stated that the Cyprus Theatre Festival continues to “be born as a star” and emphasized the importance of the festival in the cultural life of the island.
LTB President Mehmet Harmancı stated that it is a “great honor and pride” for him to open the festival’s curtain for the 20th time. “We strive to bring this festival to you, overcoming many different difficulties each year.” He emphasized that their most important support at the moment is the theatre audience, that there can be no festival without spectators, and that the festival will continue to live longer.
After the speeches, the 20th Cyprus Theatre Festival opened its “curtain” with the play “Women, Elephants, and Poets,” directed by Sibel Erdenk, Ankara State Theatre. The play tells the tragicomic story of three women who are neighbors in an ordinary apartment in a big city. The play “Women, Elephants, and Poets,” written by Yunus Emre Gümüş, featuring actors Neira Kayabaşı, Filiz Demiralp, Gül Öz, and Gizem Koçer, received enthusiastic applause.
