Scientists predict the disappearance of half of Сyprus's beaches

Scientists forecast that half of Cyprus's beaches may vanish within the next fifty years due to rising sea levels, endangering the entire tourist infrastructure.

Dr. Giorgos Zittis, a climate scientist at the Cyprus Institute, has raised alarms about the potential loss of half of the island's beaches owing to sea level increases.

"Sea level rise is projected to obliterate approximately 50% of Cyprus's beaches," he declared. Dr. Zittis noted that critical infrastructure in Cyprus, such as airports, seaports, and power stations, are situated close to the coast, rendering them susceptible to rising sea levels. The tourism sector, which relies heavily on beach-related activities, faces significant risks.

The lead researcher also highlighted that climate change is expected to intensify the heat and aridity of Cyprus's already warm summers.

"The Eastern Mediterranean region, a known climate change hotspot, is mainly affected by escalating temperatures, particularly in the summer," he remarked.

In contrast, Northern European countries tend to experience these climatic shifts during winter. The mounting heat is likely to boost energy consumption and threaten agriculture and public health. Recent heatwaves have led to heat-induced fatalities and heightened wildfire dangers.

Notably, a recent heatwave in Cyprus resulted in several extensive wildfires across the island. The Greek-controlled Paphos region saw notable damage, while significant incidents in the Turkish-controlled area occurred near Incirli Cave and between the villages of Tatlisu and Mersinlik. In the Republic of Cyprus, heatstroke has already claimed the lives of two elderly women.

Moreover, there is an anticipated reduction in rainfall for Cyprus in the forthcoming years.

"Though the patterns are not as pronounced as with temperature, we are trending towards a more arid climate," Dr. Zittis stated.

To prevent such tragic consequences, it is imperative to take action against climate change and its impacts.
